my life hasn't been quite substantial since you guys left. i've only got that many things to do, gripe about uwc, do my work, gripe about my work, plan outings to town, (i have to plan, nothing is quite that spontaneous anymore), do more work. i know people often have this concept that international schools are damn happening. in a sense, uwc is rather creative and colourful.
we have mufti days (days where you wear anything you want), quite like BeU days in stnicks cept there isn't a catch to what you can wear. the grade 12s spent their last week of school dressing up differently everyday. each day had a different theme, gangsta, superhero day, pyjamas day and some others i can't quite remember now. when uwc students dress up, they really go all out. the rugby team came in drag, there were girls in pampers, weird guys in mascot costumes and the like. there are funky people, there is spontanity, craziness and quite a lot of fun going on.
its just, as with all international schools, there isn't a common identity. you see all these people dress up and you think ogayyyyy. thats nice; thats funny and it kinda ends there. mostly because you don't know that person personally, there isn't a connection, there isn't much to talk about cos everyone is equally weirdly dressed.
there was an assembly for the leaving grade 12s, the only one that entire year. there isn't a school song to be sung, no pledge, no pray in the morning, no longwinded pricipal/vp to bitch about, no lectures about chewing gum being stuck on every single table in the classrooms, no lectures about PDAing in the middle of the canteen. most aren't particularly proud of being in uwc. you can tell, they never wear their uniforms out. the shirts come off even before they leave the school. all the guys wear another t-shirt inside.
i have made all kinds of friends left and right. school is bearable, but my days lack some major laughter. they people in my classes are quite unfunny and its quite stressful when the only thing people around me talk about is homework. but i know exactly why they do, they don't have much else to say to each other, really. i find myself being increasingly guilty of this. i guess you kinda got to realise that with some people, you really aren't going to get pass talking about homework and thats fine cos i know, like me, they don't quite know anything else. it doesn't stop it from being annoying though.
its just difficult to talk to people who are in the same situation as you are but don't quite seem to take the initiave and try to make things work out. i suppose, i suppose.
so dear sam, just get your ass back here and make things better all over again.
